How to Make your Home Look Like a Model Home

You know when you’re touring a model home and you think, “Why can’t my home look like this?” Well, we’re here to tell you that it can! Sort of.

The thing about model homes is that they haven’t been loved and lived in. Every Porchlight Home is built with genuine care and personal touch, but our homes don’t reach their full potential until a family moves in. Those little piles of books and toys—no matter how many stubbed toes—turn a house into a home.

Styling and designing the interior of your home is a fun form of creative expression. To make your home look like the model home you fell in love with, the first step is to start with a blank slate. This is easy if you’re moving into a new home, but if you’re already living in your home, here are some tips on decluttering:

  • Take everything off the walls
  • Remove everything off shelves and the tops of dressers
  • Deep clean
  • Organize closets and cabinets and donate items no longer needed

Next, make sure the interior of your home is light and bright. Stick with light and neutral paint colors. A fresh coat of paint will make your home feel fresh and new. When it comes to lighting, a simple lightbulb switch will brighten up the space. Switch out dull, fluorescent bulbs for LED bulbs that offer bright and natural-looking light.

Once you have a bright blank slate, start adding your furniture. The secret to decorating your home like a model home is all about simplifying. Only use furniture that you need. If you only have a bed and one dresser in a bedroom, that’s okay. Don’t feel like you have to keep adding things. This goes for decorating your walls, too. Take your time finding art and frames that you love. Use fewer pieces that bring you joy, rather than overdoing it.

The best tip we have for decorating your home like a model home is to take photos of designs that you love. Then, use those as inspiration for your own home. Whether it’s replicating a well-done gallery wall or arranging your dining room in a unique way, there’s no harm in copying a design that you see in-person or online.
